Eco-school fines teachers for too much energy use

I did one of our Climate Talk events yesterday which always bring out some interesting stories. One of the attendees was a school governor.
 
When they analysed their electricity use, they realised, like a lot of schools, that a lot of energy was being wasted. They then assigned the teachers an ‘energy budget’. If they went over their energy budget, they were fined and their overall budget cut. The only way to avoid this was for them to ensure that lights were turned off when ever possible and all equipment shut down at the end of the day. Needless to say, it worked.

They are now going for eco-schools green flag status but 'still have a lot more to do' according to her.
