Forest School's Out for Summer
For the past 2 years I’ve been a parent helper at my daughter’s school. One afternoon a week I work with the reception class in the wooded area that they have on site. I have certainly become a master in the art of capturing ‘mini-beasts’. Although the first few sessions with each group often includes some gentle guidance on making sure they survive the process! It’s wonderful to see the children’s increasing enthusiasm and confidence as they establish new skills and knowledge about the world around them. One of the most satisfying things is to see children who struggle in the classroom environment really shine and get pleasure out of learning something new. The weather often challenges us all, but for some it’s a new experience to stick it out and not run for cover at the first sign of rain. Mud forms a pretty integral part of the process too and it’s surprising how many children worry at first about getting a little grubby. For some it’s simply the best part!
Many schools throughout Shropshire participate in the Forest School scheme to encourage young people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world. Teachers or play leaders are given training in order to incorporate the outdoor activities into the National Curriculum which really makes it a part of the learning experience. I’ve found it to be a wonderfully positive experience for the children and for myself and I am left with a great sense of hope that this early experience will develop in these children and become a real sense of respect for the natural world.
