Volunteer Day

Date:
30 Jun 2009 - 10:00 - 30 Jun 2009 - 14:30

Shrewsbury based charity, Marches Energy Agency are currently celebrating the success of a series of exciting projects in the UK and Africa.

The communication and education team in Carbon Forum have been overwhelmed with the positive responses they’ve received for their Climate Change Exhibition in the National Museum of Uganda, which launched earlier this week.

Team Leader Kris McGowan said “it’s wonderful to hear that the Ugandan government and the UN Environment Programme are so excited by the project that they want to see it expanded and that the teachers who have had the chance to look at the exhibition want to use the information back in their classrooms. Now we are keen to tailor this exhibition to use here in the UK, it will really compliment the schools and college work that we do here.”

Having won a prize in the prestigious Ashden Awards for its Low Carbon Communities projects, Trustee Sebastian Bowen, Director Richard Davies and Low Carbon Communities Team Leader Simon Ross were in London yesterday to receive the award at a prestigious ceremony, with a key speech by HRH the Prince of Wales.

The Ashden Award Judges commented “Marches’ Low Carbon Communities (LCC) programme has found a way to inject enthusiasm for green action at the local level that can mobilise the whole community and leave it empowered.”

The rest of 2009 involves some wonderful new projects which build upon these successes and MEA are looking for a whole range of volunteers to help deliver them.

“We already have a small team of dedicated volunteers and we are particularly proud that Karen Smith, who works alongside the Carbon Forum team, has just completed her NVQ in Business and Administration Level 3. This was provided by SBC training, and based with MEA. The course was free as it was funded by the government’s Train to Gain Scheme. She’s now going on to do an Advanced Adult Apprentiship with MEA.

We need people who are willing to help with events, research and office work and so we’ve decided to hold a volunteer recruitment day. We will be able to tell volunteers more about our projects and let them know what opportunities there are to support our work. In exchange they will gain some really valuable experience and the satisfaction of working in such an important environmental field.”

If anyone wants to know about MEA and the chance to volunteer the open day is at 1000 hrs on 30th June 2009. Wendy 01743 246007 or email sarah@mea.org.uk
